RESPONSE

Healthcare Ready is ENGAGED for the 2022 monkeypox outbreak. We are in rigorous communication with private and public sector partners to monitor the spread of the outbreak, supply chain needs for treatment and prevention, and vulnerabilities.

POXVIRUS MAP

Healthcare Ready’s Poxvirus Map shows important information about the current monkeypox virus outbreak in the US. The map consists of three different views: 

  1. JYNNEOS Vaccine Distribution displays the number of vaccines requested by and allocated (delivered) to each state. Data is sourced from ASPR.
  2. Reported Cases displays the number of reported cases of monkeypox present per state. Data is sourced from CDC.  
  3. Emergency Declarations displays Public Health Emergencies present per state across the country. Once the state or territory has been clicked, sources for each subject will appear in the lower left-hand side of the display box.

How to use the map: Hover over a state or territory to display information about that location. Clicking on a state or territory will “pin” the displayed information, keeping it in place even if you remove your mouse from the map.

SITUATION OVERVIEW

Monkeypox (MPX), discovered in 1958, is an orthopoxvirus caused by an infection with the monkeypox virus. Monkeypox shares the same family as the variola virus, the virus that causes smallpox. Symptoms of the virus are similar to smallpox, but usually milder and rarely fatal. Monkeypox can affect anyone regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

Monkeypox cases have increased and spread across the globe in countries that typically do not experience monkeypox outbreaks. On July 23, 2022, the World Health Organization declared that the increased spread of infection across the globe constituted a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). To date, only seven other PHEICs have been declared; a PHEIC is the highest public health declaration that can be issued by the World Health Organization. The last PHEIC declaration prior to monkeypox was that for the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Healthcare Ready’s Role During the Monkeypox Outbreak
Our focus during this outbreak is to ensure supplies for vaccines, testing, and treatment will be available in sufficient quantities to ensure the most vulnerable communities are appropriately prioritized and making sure scarce or limited resources are adequately reaching the communities that need it most.

Healthcare Ready is Closely Monitoring the Following Areas

  • Supply chain operations, including demand for pharmaceuticals, personal protective equipment, and issues related to workforce, business continuity, and border restrictions.­
  • Response of the US health system to mitigate the outbreak domestically. Healthcare Ready is working with health systems to understand their concerns and coordinating with federal partners to understand healthcare and public health impacts.
  • Global response efforts to contain the outbreak including tracking the impacts of travel advisories and quarantine recommendations.
  • Humanitarian assistance efforts to coordinate donations and supplies for where they’re most needed
