Why a Resilient and Prepared Healthcare System is Critical to Our Mission

Healthcare Ready was created in 2006 to protect patients and support our healthcare supply chain during crises. The resources on this page highlight our impact as we work to build stronger, more resilient communities that can prepare for, respond to, and recover from natural disasters and public health emergencies.

As a nonprofit, we collaborate with partners across the public and private sectors to enhance preparedness, strengthen infrastructure, and ensure emergency response systems are in place. When these resources are insufficient or unavailable, entire communities and the people who rely on them for survival face even greater risks. In 2005, the world saw firsthand the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, which exposed vulnerabilities in response efforts and the healthcare system that continue to affect communities today.

This is why our mission remains focused on ensuring that all communities—especially those most affected by disasters—have access to the resources, healthcare, and emergency support they need. Through our partnerships in healthcare and emergency management, we help organizations strengthen their role in preparedness, response, and recovery to safeguard public health.

Healthcare Ready is committed to working alongside our partners to ensure no community is left behind during a crisis. By reinforcing supply chains, improving disaster response coordination, and advocating for stronger preparedness measures, we help communities recover faster and build a more secure future for all.

Tools to Strengthen Community Preparedness and Access to Care

At Healthcare Ready, we are committed to ensuring that communities have access to the critical healthcare resources they need before, during, and after a crisis. Our suite of tools is designed to support patients, healthcare providers, emergency responders, and policymakers in navigating disasters and strengthening response efforts.

Rx Open

During disasters, access to medications is critical. Rx Open maps the operating status of pharmacies and dialysis centers in affected areas, helping patients and providers quickly locate open facilities. This tool ensures that communities—especially those facing disruptions—can continue to access lifesaving medications.

Community Disaster Resilience Tool (CDRT) Map

Effective disaster planning starts with understanding vulnerabilities. The CDRT Map provides localized data on community risk factors, healthcare infrastructure, and social determinants that impact resilience. By equipping emergency planners and response organizations with this information, we help communities strengthen their preparedness efforts and mitigate risks before disasters strike.

Rx On The Run

A lost prescription can become a life-threatening situation in an emergency. Rx On The Run is a customizable wallet card that allows individuals to document their essential medications, allergies, and pharmacy information, ensuring they have a vital record to share with healthcare providers if they are displaced or unable to access their regular care.

Pediatrics Bed Utilization Map

Children require specialized care during disasters. When activated our Pediatrics Bed Utilization Map provides data on pediatric hospital bed availability, allowing emergency responders and healthcare professionals to direct families to the nearest facilities with capacity to treat young patients.

Each of these tools reinforces our commitment to protecting patient access to care, reducing disruptions to healthcare services, and strengthening emergency response systems. By ensuring that individuals and communities have the information and resources they need, we help create a more resilient healthcare system that is ready to respond to any crisis.
