2024 Crowdstrike / Microsoft Outage
Response
Healthcare Ready is currently ENGAGED for impacts from the Microsoft outage. We are monitoring supply chain needs and community impact with the assistance of our private and public sector partners.
Overview
- Today, a widespread outage at Microsoft has significantly impacted various services, including Azure, Microsoft 365, Teams, and Outlook. The outage has disrupted businesses and organizations worldwide, including those in the healthcare sector and supply chain management.
- This was not a cyber-attack. The issue stemmed from a software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike that disabled Windows computers, affecting various health systems differently, with some continuing operations with delays while others suspended services entirely, highlighting the vulnerability of healthcare IT infrastructure.
- The IT disruption is also impacting other sectors, with FedEx reporting “substantial disruptions” to its networks and warning of possible delays for package deliveries scheduled for Friday.
- Airlines impacted include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Allegiant Air and United Airlines.

Healthcare Ready's Role
Healthcare Ready works to monitor and evaluate the situation around any damage and provide analysis of its implications. We aim to provide information across sectors to supply information to all parties involved or impacted. Healthcare Ready is focusing efforts on highlighting challenges and supporting solutions to these challenges and impacts resulting from the situation.
A part of monitoring during this time is through Rx Open. Rx Open provides information on the operating status of healthcare facilities in areas impacted by a disaster. When the map is active for an event, users can use the Facilities map to search for individual facility status such as pharmacies, community health centers, and dialysis centers.
