Healthcare Ready's Releases on GA Wildfires
Overview
Updated: May 4, 2026
The two biggest incidents highlighted are the Highway 82 Fire in Brantley County and the Pineland Road Fire near the Florida line. Together, they have burned tens of thousands of acres, destroyed homes, and remained only partially contained during the period covered by the reports. One report noted that the Highway 82 Fire had surpassed 31 square miles, with evacuations being considered to worsen as winds threaten conditions.
Governor Kemp declared a state of emergency for 91 counties, and state agencies, the National Guard, and local responders have been mobilized to support suppression and evacuation efforts. Response has included air assets, ground crews, the Georgia Forestry Commission, Georgia Emergency Management, and the Georgia National Guard. The state also activated resources such as helicopters, dozers, law enforcement support, and livestock relocation assistance, showing this is being treated as a multiagency disaster response. Officials also emphasized that evacuation compliance and public safety are the top priorities.
The fires are being fueled by unusually dry conditions, and reports indicate that smoke has spread far beyond the fire zones, causing air-quality concerns in other parts of the region. The broader concern is that these fires may be an early warning sign of a potentially difficult wildfire season, especially given ongoing drought and lingering dead fuel from Hurricane Helene’s impact in 2024.

Healthcare Ready's Role during the GA Wildfires
Healthcare Ready works to monitor and evaluate the situation around the damage and provide analysis of its implications. We aim to provide information across sectors to supply information to all parties involved or impacted. Healthcare Ready is focusing efforts on highlighting challenges and supporting solutions to these challenges from the damages.
A part of monitoring during this time is through Rx Open. Rx Open provides information on the operating status of healthcare facilities in areas impacted by a disaster. When the map is active for an event, users can use the Facilities map to search for individual facility status such as pharmacies, community health centers, and dialysis centers.
