Overview
- On April 1, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) was informed by the US of a human case of influenza A(H5N1) originating from contact with infected dairy cattle.
- This marks the first human infection from contact with infected cattle and the second confirmed case of A(H5N1) in the US.
- An adult in Texas developed symptoms on March 27 after contact with infected dairy cattle. The patient received antiviral treatment and is recovering.
- No additional cases have been identified, and the virus hasn’t mutated to facilitate human transmission, so the public health risk is deemed low.
- USDA detected A(H5N1) in dairy cattle across multiple states.
- CDC advises avoiding contact with sick animals and raw/uncooked products.
- The US maintains a surveillance system to protect public health and food supply.
