Overview

Hurricane Beryl made landfall on the southeastern coast of Texas early Monday morning as a Category 1 storm, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. The storm’s center was located about 45 miles north-northeast of Matagorda, Texas, and about 40 miles southwest of Houston. It is moving north at approximately 12 mph, bringing dangerous storm surge, flash flooding, and strong winds to the region.

Beryl initially strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane, setting a record for the earliest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic. However, it weakened significantly before making landfall in Texas. Despite this weakening, the storm has caused significant impacts, including the potential for up to 15 inches of rainfall in some areas, power outages, and severe flooding. Evacuations and precautionary measures have been implemented across Texas to mitigate the storm’s impact.

Beryl also made significant impacts as it moved through the Caribbean and towards Mexico and the southern United States. After causing severe damage and 10 fatalities in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, Beryl made landfall on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula as a Category 2 hurricane, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall to areas like Tulum and Cancun.

Healthcare Ready's Role

Healthcare Ready works to monitor and evaluate the situation around the damage and provide analysis of its implications. We aim to provide information across sectors to supply information to all parties involved or impacted. Healthcare Ready is focusing efforts on highlighting challenges and supporting solutions to these challenges from the damages.

A part of monitoring during this time is through Rx Open. Rx Open provides information on the operating status of healthcare facilities in areas impacted by a disaster. When the map is active for an event, users can use the Facilities map to search for individual facility status such as pharmacies, community health centers, and dialysis centers.
